How it works

A mirror selfie has a phone in it because the phone is what took it. There are two ways to a picture without one, and the app does both.

In hand: the phone is taken out

Find the hands. A pose model finds you and your wrists. The phone is always in a hand, and hands can be found at sizes where a phone is only a few pixels tall.
Find the phone. An object detector looks closely at each hand. Then the whole phone is traced from there, because a phone half-hidden by fingers is otherwise only half found — and a half-erased phone grows back.
Fill it. An inpainting model paints in what was behind it: your shirt, your hand at rest, the wall. The grain is matched to the rest of the photograph so the patch does not look smoother than everything around it.

One thing it will not do: if the phone covers your face, it is left alone. Any face painted in there would be invented, and it would not be yours. The viewfinder tells you while there is still time to lower the phone.

Hands-free: there is no phone to take out

Stand the phone up to one side of the mirror, turned in at an angle, and step in front. A camera only sees its own reflection when it faces the mirror nearly square on; turned away by more than about thirty degrees, its reflection falls outside the frame. You get the mirror, and you, and no phone at all. Raise a hand to start the timer.

Nothing leaves the device

The camera stream, the models and the gallery are all local. The models are downloaded once, from this same site, never from a content network, and after that the app makes no outbound requests at all. You can prove it: put the phone in aeroplane mode and it still works.

Second Person

The mirror selfie without the phone.

Take it like you always do. Hold the phone at your chest, not over your face, and the phone comes out.
Or go hands-free. Stand the phone up, turned a little away from the mirror, and raise a hand. No phone in the picture at all.
