How it works

A mirror selfie has a phone in it because the phone is what took it. Second Person removes it using the one thing every mirror selfie already has: the seconds you spent framing.

The buffer. While you frame, the last few seconds are held in memory. In them the phone has been in a dozen different places, and the room behind it was photographed the whole time.
The occluder. Every held frame is aligned to the moment you pressed the shutter. Whatever agrees across all of them is the room. Whatever disagrees is the phone and the hand holding it.
The union. The phone is tracked back through each frame, so the app knows which frames saw which part of what it was covering — and takes those pixels.
The seam. A frame from three seconds ago is a slightly different exposure. The error is measured just outside the repair, where the truth is known, and carried inward, so the patch has no edge.
The remainder. Anything no frame ever saw is woven from the surrounding fabric, patch by patch, so texture continues rather than blurring.

The number under the photograph tells you the split: how much was recovered from real observations, and how much had to be woven.

Nothing leaves the device

The camera stream, the buffer, the rebuild and the gallery are all local. The fonts and the depth model are served from this same origin rather than from a content network, so once the app has loaded it makes no outbound requests at all. You can prove it: put the phone in aeroplane mode and it still works.
